Deer Collision Tips for Indiana Drivers This Fall
Fall brings beautiful drives through Tippecanoe County, and it also brings more deer near the roads. Deer are most active around dawn and dusk, which lines up with many peopleâs commutes. A few simple habits can lower your risk and help you know what to do if it happens.
How to lower your risk
Slow down on country roads and near wooded areas, especially early in the morning and in the evening. Use your high beams when there is no oncoming traffic, and scan the shoulders as well as the road ahead. If you see one deer, expect more to follow.
If a deer steps in front of you, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Swerving can send you into oncoming traffic or off the road, which is often more dangerous than the deer itself.
What to do after hitting a deer
Pull over somewhere safe, turn on your hazard lights and check everyone for injuries. Stay away from the animal. Call the police if anyone is hurt, if the car is not safe to drive or if the deer is blocking traffic. Take photos of the damage and the area before you leave.
How car insurance usually handles it
Hitting a deer is usually covered under the comprehensive part of an auto policy, not collision. If you only carry liability coverage, damage to your own car may not be covered at all. Now is a good time to look at your auto insurance and make sure your coverage and deductible still fit your needs.
