Fire Prevention Month: Simple Steps to Protect Your Home
October is Fire Prevention Month, and it is a great reminder to check on a few simple things that help keep your family safe.
Smoke alarms
Test your smoke alarms, replace batteries as needed and replace old alarms. Make sure you have alarms on every level of your home and near bedrooms.
Make an escape plan
Know two ways out of every room, pick a meeting spot outside and practice with your family, including kids.
Kitchen safety
Stay in the kitchen while cooking, keep anything that can burn away from the stove and keep a lid nearby to smother a small grease fire. Never use water on a grease fire.
Heating and electrical
Have your furnace and chimney checked before cold weather, keep space heaters away from anything flammable and avoid overloading outlets and extension cords. Clean your dryer lint trap after every load.
Check your coverage
Make sure your home insurance would cover the full cost to rebuild your home and replace your belongings. A current home inventory makes a claim much easier.
